Capital, property, businesses, time, education, information and relationships. Modern families manage many resources. As assets, companies, jurisdictions and generations multiply, it becomes harder to see the whole.
Businesses have strategy, structure, financial models, areas of responsibility, decision-making rules, risk management and succession plans.
In families, much of this often exists only in individual people’s heads.
A family is not a corporation. But it also needs a system.

Family Systems is an approach to understanding the family as one interconnected economic and governance system, where capital cannot be considered separately from business, people, information and decisions.

Assets, liabilities, cash flows, ownership and risk form the family’s financial system. They need to be considered together, in relation to long-term goals.
The aim is not simply to maximize a financial metric, but to understand what capital is for and what freedom it should create for the family.
